[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Toyota Korea launched the authentic sports car GR86 on the 16th. The new model is the successor to the Toyota 86, which was released in 2012, and is considered a representative model of Toyota Gazoo Racing along with the GR Supra. Toyota Gazoo Racing is the company's motorsports brand.
With the motto of "the joy of driving," the vehicle was developed to enjoy circuit driving without separate tuning. Engineers and drivers from the motorsports team directly participated in the vehicle development and tuning. The new car adopts a 2.4ℓ naturally aspirated horizontally opposed engine, lowering the engine's center of gravity. Compared to the Toyota 86, the displacement is 400cc higher, improving acceleration and responsiveness in the high-rev range. The 6-speed manual transmission has increased clutch capacity and gear strength. Using low-viscosity oil makes shifting smooth.
An exclusive FR platform is applied, allowing the overall vehicle center of gravity and driver seat position to be lowered. This enables stable driving during cornering and spirited driving. For circuit driving, there is a track mode that prevents vehicle spin. The underbody has additional structures to increase torsional rigidity, and aluminum materials are used in various parts to reduce weight.
The exterior is designed considering aerodynamic performance and to give a dynamic impression. The front features a grille shaped to represent the GR brand image, and the sides give a sleek impression. From mid-next month, exclusive accessories such as front and rear bumper spoilers and side skirts will also be sold. Lightweight seats are installed, and the central display is a 7-inch LCD that changes the screen to suit circuit driving when track mode is activated.
