Pohang City Builds Innovation Ecosystem through Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration ... Win-Win Development of Universities and Industry
Final Selection in All Three Fields of the '3rd Phase Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Leading University Development Project'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, has achieved the remarkable feat of having all three universities located in the city selected for the Ministry of Education’s ‘3rd Phase Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Leading University Development Project (LINC 3.0)’ competitive project.
The selected project allows each university to choose one of three types based on their conditions and characteristics, establish autonomous industry-academia cooperation goals and plans that fit the chosen type, and supports the mutual development of universities and industries.
Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) was the only university in the Gyeongbuk region selected as the ‘Technology Innovation Leading Type.’ The ‘Technology Innovation Leading Type’ aims to lead global industry-academia-research cooperation capabilities by promoting graduate school participation leadership, advancing technology transfer and commercialization achievements, and will receive 33 billion KRW (5.5 billion KRW annually) in national funding over six years.
Through this project, POSTECH plans to advance as a technology innovation leading university driving a regionally symbiotic and leading economy with next-generation tough technologies. To this end, it will create leading models centered on five specialized fields involving most departments and full-time faculty within the university: next-generation ICT, bio-health, advanced materials, future energy, and DX+advanced manufacturing.
Handong Global University was selected as the ‘Demand-Customized Growth Type’ and will receive 24 billion KRW (4 billion KRW annually) in national funding over six years. It aims for ‘National Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Capability Leadership’ by promoting customized field-centered curricula, tailored corporate support, and advancement of industry-academia cooperation-based educational environments.
Handong Global University operates internal programs for nurturing talent and entrepreneurship in future industry R&D fields such as ▲Smart Bio & Health ▲Green Energy & E-Mobility ▲Digital Tech & Services, while externally focusing on active technology transfer and joint technology development with companies to establish a robust industry-academia-research cooperation system between companies and the region. It also aims to expand these cooperation achievements to local communities and businesses.
Uiduk University was selected as the ‘Cooperation-Based Foundation Type’ and will receive 12 billion KRW (2 billion KRW annually) in national funding over six years. It aims for ‘Local Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Capability Leadership’ by expanding industry-linked educational programs and supporting corporate technical challenges.
Uiduk University plans to actively nurture talent and support companies aligned with industry and future societal demands. In particular, it will operate future energy convergence majors, marine leisure tourism convergence majors, smart food creator convergence majors, and ULB convergence majors reflecting regional industry needs. In 2023, it plans to establish and operate ICCs (Industry coupled Cooperation Centers) for corporate collaboration in each of the four convergence majors.
Handong Global University has been conducting the advanced type of the Industry-Academia Cooperation Leading University (LINC+) development project since 2015 and the social customized department-focused type of LINC+ since 2017. Uiduk University successfully carried out the social customized department-focused type of LINC+ in 2017.
