Former Lula, Ex-Brazil President, Declares Presidential Election Candidacy
October 2 Presidential Election Victory: "We Will Rebuild the Nation"
[Asia Economy International Department Reporter] Luiz In?cio Lula da Silva, former President of Brazil, officially announced his candidacy for the presidential election on the 7th (local time).
Former President Lula accepted the nomination as the presidential candidate at the Workers' Party convention held in S?o Paulo on the same day.
In his acceptance speech, former President Lula said, "I am ready not only to win the presidential election to be held on October 2nd but also to rebuild Brazil."
The event was attended by representatives from seven left-wing and center-left parties, including the Workers' Party.
Former President Lula's running mate is Geraldo Alckmin, former governor of S?o Paulo and member of the center-left Brazilian Social Democracy Party.

Former President Lula governed for eight years after winning the 2002 presidential election but was imprisoned after leaving office on charges including bribery and money laundering.
Released in 2019, he currently leads in recent presidential candidate polls with an expected vote share of 44%, ahead of President Jair Bolsonaro's 31%.
