Strengthening Various Convergent and Complex Businesses
Chae Hee-bong, President of Korea Gas Corporation (pictured), is accelerating new LNG (liquefied natural gas) business initiatives to transform the company into a leading eco-friendly energy enterprise.
On the 4th, President Chae stated, "We will break away from the LNG supply-centered business structure and rapidly promote various convergence and complex businesses through organic cooperation with related companies and active marketing activities." LNG is recognized as an eco-friendly fuel, reducing sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate emissions by 100%, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 20%, and fine dust by up to 99% compared to conventional marine fuels.
The main projects Korea Gas Corporation is pursuing include LNG bunkering, convergence hydrogen charging stations, and overseas GTP (Gas to Power) projects. The LNG bunkering business is a system where LNG-powered ships receive fuel at sea using bunkering vessels without docking at the port. LNG-powered ships offer various advantages such as low carbon emissions, reduced fuel costs, improved propulsion efficiency, and enhanced performance. Korea Gas Corporation currently owns the world's largest LNG storage facilities and has already established four exclusive LNG loading facilities at the Tongyeong LNG terminal, the only one in Korea. To carry out LNG bunkering business nationwide, the company plans to build infrastructure including two bunkering vessels for the East and South Seas, one bunkering vessel for the West Sea, and one loading facility at the Dangjin LNG receiving terminal.
The company is also advancing a project to build convergence charging stations capable of simultaneously charging hydrogen and LNG vehicles where needed. Unlike existing hydrogen charging stations that supply transported gaseous hydrogen, convergence hydrogen charging stations produce hydrogen on-site using natural gas. Depending on regional vehicle demand characteristics, these stations will also add facilities to charge various natural gas vehicles such as LNG and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.
The overseas GTP business, which offers a one-stop package from LNG procurement to power supply, is also gaining momentum. President Chae emphasized that Korea Gas Corporation is leveraging its 38 years of experience in constructing and operating LNG facilities domestically to collaborate with power generation companies and private enterprises in overseas exports of GTP projects, which include LNG procurement, receiving terminals, pipelines, and power plant construction for electricity supply.
