Park Bo-gyun Fails to Present Clear Vision... Consistently Monotonous Responses
Asked about the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism policies they want to continue, unable to specify even one
When asked if a vice minister-level official can resolve international issues, responded "Passion of the staff is important"
Park Bo-gyun, the nominee for Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, failed to present a clear vision during the confirmation hearing. He consistently gave monotonous answers even to questions about current issues in the culture, sports, and tourism sectors.
At the confirmation hearing held on the 2nd at the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, Park revealed a lack of preparation. Even when asked to directly introduce his abilities and qualifications in the culture, sports, and tourism fields, he only mentioned the cultural value discovery and reappraisal of the (US) Korean Empire Legation, which he had already referred to several times. Most of the other content was merely a personal confession of having a strong interest in culture, sports, and tourism. This included points such as publishing articles on books, films, and sports on the front page during his time as editor-in-chief of JoongAng Ilbo (2015?2016) and founding a ballet sponsorship group in 1999.
Assembly member Bae Hyun-jin said, "The Yoon Seok-yeol administration intends to continue good policies operated by the Moon Jae-in government," and asked, "Please tell us which policies you want to continue." Park was unable to explain a single policy specifically. He only vaguely stated, "I will take the previous administration’s policies such as K-content support and sports sector support as lessons from the past to apply to the present." When asked if there were any policies he wanted to boldly overhaul, he only mentioned issues related to freedom of the press and the Hanhanryeong (ban on Korean entertainment in China) but failed to present any practical direction or measures.

She expressed discomfort, saying, "I don’t know if it’s right to continue questioning like this or if the hearing should proceed."

A representative example was the Q&A with Assembly member Park Jeong regarding the establishment of a Tourism Agency. Park Jeong asked, "I want to know whether the Tourism Agency planned to be newly established in Jeju Island will be under the jurisdiction of the Jeju Provincial Government or not." Park Bo-gyun did not provide a clear answer. When asked about the necessity of the agency, he said, "I will organize my thoughts after gathering opinions from the industry and academia." When asked, "Can a Tourism Agency head at the vice-ministerial level smoothly collaborate with other ministries and resolve overseas issues?" he replied, "What matters more than the minister or vice minister is how passionately the person in charge works." In response, Assembly member Park criticized, "In international issues or inter-ministerial agreements, it is the minister who should remove barriers and coordinate, not the agency head. If it were a matter for a staff member to resolve, would there be a need to reorganize the government?"
