[Box Office] Weekend Event Effect Strong... 'Sinbihan Dongmuldeul' Tops for 3rd Week
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The movie "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" has topped the weekend box office for three consecutive weeks.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales system on the 2nd, "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" attracted 187,146 viewers over the three-day weekend (April 29 to May 1), securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on April 13, it has recorded a cumulative audience of 1,075,526, becoming the second film released this year to surpass one million viewers.
The film is the third installment following "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" (2016) and "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" (2018), connecting the "Harry Potter" series and "Fantastic Beasts." It depicts a magical war to save a vast and dangerous world amid the battle between Grindelwald, who declared war on Muggles, and Dumbledore's army.
The movie "I Want to See Your Parents' Faces" (directed by Kim Jihoon), which deals with school violence, debuted in second place with 159,608 viewers. It was released on April 27 and attracted 228,459 viewers during its opening weekend.
The omnibus horror film "Seoul Ghost Stories" drew 42,800 viewers to rank third, while "Air Murder," which deals with the humidifier disinfectant incident, attracted 30,542 viewers to take fourth place.
Following these, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" ranked fifth, "Anchor" came in sixth, and "Spring Day," starring Son Hyunju, entered the charts at ninth place.

The total number of moviegoers during the first weekend allowing eating and drinking inside theaters was 589,609, an increase of about 130,000 compared to 456,317 the previous weekend, which was the first weekend after social distancing was lifted. This appears to be the effect of the "Culture Day" discount event on April 27 and the 1,000 won event "Movie Week."
