CJ CheilJedang, First in Food Industry to Obtain 'Zero Waste Landfill' Certification
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] CJ CheilJedang announced on the 28th that it has become the first company in the domestic food industry to receive the 'Zero Waste to Landfill' Gold certification from UL, a global environmental and safety certification company.
The 'Zero Waste to Landfill Certification' is an indicator that evaluates a company's efforts in resource circulation, verified by the global certification company UL. Based on the proportion of business site waste that is reused as resources without incineration or landfill, Silver (90?94%), Gold (95?99%), and Platinum (100%) grades are awarded.
The business site that received the Gold grade this time is the Jincheon plant in Chungbuk, which produces Spam, ham, and sausages, recognized for a waste recycling rate of 99.46%. The Jincheon plant increased the utilization value of by-products such as soybean pulp generated after product production and received circular resource certification from the Ministry of Environment. Additionally, contaminated sediment generated after food wastewater treatment is manufactured into compost used for soil improvement and applied in agricultural production activities.
Besides the Jincheon plant, CJ CheilJedang records a recycling rate of over 90% at five other domestic business sites. The company plans to achieve zero landfill across all domestic and overseas business sites by 2030. It also aims to reduce food loss and waste by 50% through expanding food donations and recycling.
