Gangwon Issues 'Highway and High-Speed Rail Network Construction' Highest at 26.2%
'Geomsu Wanbak' Opposition 49.8% vs Support 32.3%
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] In a public opinion poll asking about the next Gangwon Province governor approval ratings, Kim Jin-tae, the People Power Party candidate for Gangwon Province governor, was shown to be ahead of Lee Kwang-jae, the Democratic Party candidate, beyond the margin of error.
In the approval rating survey conducted by Realmeter commissioned by MBN from the 25th to 26th among 805 men and women aged 18 and older residing in Gangwon Province, candidate Kim recorded 48.8%, while candidate Lee recorded 41.0%. This was followed by 'Don't know' at 4.2%, 'None' at 3.3%, and 'Other figures' at 2.7%.
The gap between candidate Kim and candidate Lee was 7.8 percentage points, which is outside the margin of error (95% confidence level ±3.5 percentage points).
Candidate Kim led candidate Lee across all regions of Gangwon, receiving high support in the Chuncheon area (52.0%) and Gangneung area (49.3%). Candidate Lee had relatively high approval ratings in the Wonju area (43.4%) and Chuncheon area (41.2%).
Candidate Kim received strong support from those aged 60 and above (67.8%) and those in their 50s (49.0%), while candidate Lee led candidate Kim among those in their 40s (55.4%), 30s (48.4%), and 20s and below (42.1%).
Party approval ratings showed the People Power Party at 51.5%, leading the Democratic Party at 36.6% by 14.9 percentage points.
The 'most urgent issue' that Gangwon Province needs to address was 'Establishment of a high-speed network of Gangwon-type highways and railroads,' which accounted for 26.2%, the highest.
This was followed by 'Establishment of Gangwon Special Economic Autonomous Province and implementation of innovative regulatory reforms' at 16.8%, 'Focused development of five specialized new growth industries by Gangwon's five major regions' at 14.4%, and 'Revitalization of the mining area economy and fostering of alternative industries' at 10.3%.
Additionally, 'Development of tourism themes such as the Osaek Cable Car construction for global tourism city development' was at 8.7%, 'Realization of high value-added agriculture, forestry, and fisheries responding to climate change' at 8.2%, and 'Creation of a carbon-neutral special zone in Gangwon Province' at 5.0%.
Regarding the so-called 'complete removal of prosecution investigation rights (Geomsu Wanbak)' mediation proposal between the ruling and opposition parties, 49.8% of respondents answered that it 'should not be accepted,' while 32.3% said it 'should be accepted.'
Regarding the outlook on President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol's government performance, 32.3% said 'will do very well,' and 21.3% said 'will generally do well,' totaling 53.6% who expressed a positive outlook. Meanwhile, 27.1% said 'will not do very well,' and 13.1% said 'will generally not do well,' totaling 40.2% who expressed a negative outlook.
