Incheon Yeonsu-gu Records Lowest COVID-19 Fatality Rate Among Seoul Metropolitan Districts...Focused Management of Elderly and Foreigners Proves Effective
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Among the basic local governments in the Incheon area, Yeonsu-gu was found to have the lowest cumulative COVID-19 fatality rate (mortality rate).
According to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on the 13th, as of the 4th, Incheon recorded 1,094 deaths out of 864,639 cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases, resulting in a fatality rate of 0.13%.
By district, Yeonsu-gu had the lowest fatality rate at 0.03%, followed by Dong-gu (0.07%), Seo-gu (0.10%), Bupyeong-gu (0.13%), Gyeyang-gu (0.14%), and Namdong-gu and Michuhol-gu (0.17%).
On the other hand, Ganghwa-gun and Jung-gu showed the highest fatality rates at 0.23% based on the ratio of deaths to confirmed cases. Ongjin-gun was excluded from the fatality rate statistics due to a small number of index patients.
Yeonsu-gu recorded the lowest fatality rate among basic local governments in the metropolitan area, alongside Gwacheon-si in Gyeonggi Province (0.03%). It is also the second lowest among districts in metropolitan cities nationwide, following Gangseo-gu in Busan (0.02%).
Considering statistics that show people aged 60 and over account for 93.8% of total deaths, it is evaluated that early stable management, such as proactive vaccination of the elderly who were at high risk of severe illness and death last year, was effective.
Moreover, among autonomous districts with cumulative confirmed cases in the hundred-thousands over the past two years, Yeonsu-gu is the only one nationwide to show a fatality rate in the 0.03% range, which is attributed to continuous focused management and support for elderly and vulnerable group protection facilities such as nursing homes.

A Yeonsu-gu official stated, "We were the first in the country to operate a vaccination center for seniors aged 75 and older and hired dedicated temporary workers for elderly care, focusing on increasing vaccination rates among the elderly in the early stages of COVID-19 vaccination. Additionally, through active quarantine responses for high-risk facilities such as nursing homes and vulnerable foreign residents, we minimized the fatality rate."
