Park Jin, Head of the Korea-US Policy Consultation Delegation, "Will Convey President-Elect's Intentions to Biden Clearly"
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Park Jin, a member of the People Power Party and head of the 'Korea-US Policy Consultation Delegation' dispatched by President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol to the United States, said on the 31st, "I will make sure the president-elect's intentions are well conveyed to President Biden."
Park said this in response to a question from reporters in front of the Transition Committee in Tongui-dong on whether he was essentially carrying the president-elect's message in the form of a special envoy.
The policy consultation delegation is currently coordinating meeting schedules with U.S. officials. The delegation is expected to depart around the 3rd of next month at the earliest, but the duration of the visit to the U.S. is flexible depending on the meeting schedule.
Since the U.S. Congress will go on recess for two weeks starting April 11, the delegation must visit the U.S. before then to meet with congressional officials. Park said, "From April 11, it's the Easter recess of the U.S. Congress," adding, "We have to go before that."
He said, "We are now setting the schedule," and regarding the U.S. officials to be met during the visit, he said, "We will keep all possibilities open and meet as many as possible."
Considering precedents, the president-elect's delegation is expected to meet key officials from the U.S. Department of State, Department of Defense, and the White House National Security Council (NSC) to broadly discuss issues related to the Korean Peninsula and the development of the Korea-US alliance.
In particular, whether a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who leads the State Department, will be arranged is a point of interest. The delegation is expected to stay in the U.S. mainly next week to carry out their schedule, as Secretary Blinken may attend face-to-face meetings of NATO countries and Asia-Pacific foreign ministers in Brussels, Belgium, on April 6-7.
This Korea-US policy consultation delegation is composed of experts in various fields including Korea-US relations, North Korean nuclear issues, China, Japan, economic security, and military cooperation.
