"Spam Calls and Emails Decreased by 18.1% in the Second Half of Last Year"
Mobile Phone Voice Down 6.2%, Mobile Phone Text Down 10.3%, Email Down 31.8%
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] The number of spam cases via mobile phones and emails in the second half of last year decreased by 18.1% compared to the first half.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced on the 31st that according to the survey on the distribution status of mobile phone and email spam in the second half of last year, the total number of reported and detected mobile phone and email spam cases was 28.31 million, down 18.1% from 34.55 million in the first half.
The average daily amount of spam received on mobile phones and emails, surveyed among 3,000 users, was 0.42 cases, a decrease from 0.45 cases in the first half.
The blocking rate of intelligent spam blocking services by the three mobile carriers was 96.2%, up 0.4 percentage points from the first half.
Among detailed items, voice spam on mobile phones was 11.82 million cases, down 6.2% from the first half. Mobile phone text spam was 6.34 million cases, a decrease of 10.3%. Email spam was reported and detected at 10.15 million cases, down 31.8% from the first half.
Looking at the countries of origin for spam coming from overseas, China accounted for the largest share at 73.6%, followed by the United States (3.9%) and Brazil (2.4%).

Han Sang-hyuk, chairman of the KCC, stated, "The KCC will continue to strengthen responses to voice and text spam on mobile phones," adding, "To this end, we will steadily promote the advancement of KISA's spam response system, strengthen on-site inspections by telecom companies, and implement measures to prevent illegal spam distribution impersonating banks."
