Police Find Mother with Brain Hemorrhage during Highway Drive through Video Call with Child
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A story has recently come to light about a police officer who rescued a woman in her 30s driving on the highway while suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage through a video call with a 9-year-old child.
According to the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency on the 30th, at 5:22 p.m. on the 14th of last month, a report was received at the 112 call center stating, "My younger sister A's condition suddenly seems to have worsened while driving."
A's older sister, B, who works at a hospital in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, received a call from a hospital official saying, "A had just left the hospital heading home by car, but her speech was slurred and her hands were trembling, which was unusual," and after calling A several times without an answer, she requested help from 112.
A is known to have regularly helped her nephew C (9 years old) with outpatient treatment by traveling between her home in Hwaseong and the hospital in Gwangju on behalf of B and her husband.
The police who received the report immediately used the mobile phone GPS location tracking system to roughly identify A's vehicle location but could not determine the exact position.
Lieutenant Bang Doseon of the Maesong Police Substation under Hwaseong West Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the area, received the situation report and after several attempts, managed to have a difficult phone conversation with A, but due to her slurred speech, normal communication was impossible.
Lieutenant Bang then asked the child C, who was in the car, to take the phone and said, "This is the police officer. Do you know how to do a video call?" and proceeded with a video call, asking C to show the view outside the window and then the front of the car in turn.
On the video call screen, seeing the high-speed railway tracks and the central divider, he confirmed that A was driving on the Bibong?Maesong Expressway.
Lieutenant Bang reassured C by saying, "I am coming your way, so please wait a little," then drove the patrol car to the scene and around 5:37 p.m. found A stopped in the emergency lane with her car straddling the lane on the highway.
A was immediately handed over to the 119 emergency medical team and transported to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a cerebral hemorrhage. It is reported that her condition has since greatly improved.
Lieutenant Bang said, "Since the road A was driving on was a highway, it was a very dangerous situation," and added, "I am truly relieved that we were able to rescue her safely without a secondary accident."
