Probation for 20-Year-Old Who Assaulted Peer During Internet Personal Broadcast
Assaulted Girlfriend and Extorted Cash from Viewers
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Wooseok] A man in his 20s who assaulted a peer while broadcasting on the internet was sentenced to probation.
The Incheon District Court Criminal Division 14 (Judge Park Shinyoung) announced on the 30th that YouTuber A (26), who was indicted for defamation and injury under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with 3 years probation and ordered to perform 160 hours of community service.
YouTuber B (24), who was also indicted for injury, was fined 2 million won.
A was charged with assaulting C (23) and spitting on his face while broadcasting on the internet at an apartment in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, on June 25, 2020.
After the broadcast ended, he continued the assault near the apartment by slapping C’s cheek and kicking his chest. A was also charged with verbally abusing and threatening his girlfriend in September of the same year, and defrauding two viewers of his broadcast of about 6 million won.

The court stated the sentencing reason, saying, "Considering the method and circumstances of the defendant’s crime, the nature of the crime is quite serious," and "It is doubtful whether the defendant, who continued to commit additional crimes during the trial, is truly reflecting on his wrongdoing."
