Under the sponsorship of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the four major societies?Korean Management Society, Korean Economic Society, Korean Political Science Association, and Korean Sociological Association?along with the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, have decided to focus on discussing the tasks of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration.
On the 30th, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced that it will hold an academic conference under the theme "Tasks of the New Government for Sustainable Development of the Republic of Korea." The conference, to be held on the 31st from 8:40 a.m. at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry International Conference Room, will present the results of an expert survey jointly conducted by the four major societies.
Common theme presentations will follow by representatives of each society, including Professor Yoon Seong-i of Kyung Hee University (Korean Political Science Association), Professor Kim Jin-young of Korea University (Korean Economic Society), Professor Lee Kyung-mook of Seoul National University (Korean Management Society), and Professor Lee Jae-yeol of Seoul National University (Korean Sociological Association). The event will also be live-streamed on a YouTube channel.
The expert survey targeting members of the four societies diagnoses the current reality of Korean society. The results reveal the importance and priority of 51 major policy tasks recommended for the new government across six policy areas: politics, diplomacy and security, economy, business, society, and culture and education.
At the morning opening ceremony, the congratulatory speech of President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol will be read by Vice Chairman Kwon Young-se of the Presidential Transition Committee. Speaker of the National Assembly Park Byeong-seug and Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Choi Tae-won will also deliver congratulatory messages on the holding of the integrated academic conference. In the afternoon, a keynote speech will be given by Kim Byung-joon, Chair of the Regional Balanced Development Special Committee of the Presidential Transition Committee.
The main presentation contents are summarized into four keywords: sustainable democracy, expansion of growth potential and labor flexibility, free market economy, and virtuous cycle of economy, society, and environment. Professor Yoon diagnosed that "Korean politics is currently entering an era of paradigm shift." Through his presentation, he plans to propose measures to find a new model of democracy, such as institutional design at a micro level rather than grand discourse, and an open attitude toward the possibility of policy errors.
Professor Kim emphasizes the importance of labor flexibility. He will present on easing regulations to facilitate employment, the importance of easy job changes and dismissals, and building a flexible labor market. Professor Lee Kyung-mook is scheduled to present on the topic of "small government." His argument is that for Korea to leap forward, it must resolve excessively bloated government functions and pursue a small and efficient government. He will suggest participation of major opposition parties in institutional reform, transition to a comprehensive negative regulation system, and privatization of public enterprises.
