"Russia Focuses on Key Military Objectives, Donbas Liberation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] Sergey Shoigu, Russian Minister of Defense, announced on the 29th (local time) that he would focus on liberating the Donbas region, the main objective, in relation to the progress of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Minister Shoigu stated in a defense-related video conference that "the primary task of the first phase of the military operation has been completed overall," evaluating that the Ukrainian military's strength has been significantly weakened. He added, "Accordingly, we can now concentrate efforts on achieving the main goal of liberating Donbas," and "the special military operation will continue until the objectives are achieved."
Shoigu also claimed that the Ukrainian military has suffered severe losses. He said, "The Ukrainian forces have sustained serious losses," adding, "We have secured air superiority, and the Ukrainian air force and air defense systems have been almost destroyed." Furthermore, he asserted that the navy, ground forces, and airborne strike units have also incurred considerable losses.
This statement followed remarks by Sergey Rudskoy, First Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff, on the 25th, who said, "'Phase 1 operation' has mostly been implemented," and "the Russian military will focus on the complete liberation of the Donbas region."

The Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, where many pro-Russian residents live, has been the site of clashes between government forces and pro-Russian separatist rebels such as the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) and the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), who have been calling for independence since 2014. Recently, there have been forecasts that Russia will pursue a plan to make the LPR and DPR independent and incorporate them into the Russian Federation, dividing Ukraine like North and South Korea, rather than occupying the entire country.
