[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is creating a total of 461 public parking spaces at Majang-dong Livestock Market and Seongsu-dong Ttukseom Retention Pond, opening and operating them from April.
The parking lots located on eight parcels including Majang-dong 525 and Seongsu-dong 1-ga 685-63 cover a total floor area of 6,487㎡ and 14,112㎡ respectively. Through 15 months of construction from January last year to this month, 117 parking spaces were created at Majang Livestock Market and 344 spaces at Ttukseom Retention Pond.
Parking management systems such as license plate recognition devices and payment machines, along with CCTV using security lights and security light towers, have been installed. Landscaping with ornamental trees has been done on the rooftops and exterior areas. Both parking lots, fully prepared for operation, are scheduled to be officially opened to residents starting in April. The parking lots will be operated with an unmanned control system, available 24 hours a day, allowing users to choose monthly regular parking or hourly parking according to full-day or day/night periods.
Until now, the district has been making various efforts to alleviate parking difficulties and surrounding traffic congestion in these areas by planning and constructing parking lots.
First, Majang Livestock Market, covering an area of 116,150㎡ with about 2,000 stores, is a representative wholesale and retail market specializing in livestock products, handling over 60% of livestock distribution in the metropolitan area. It also has high demand for parking from visitors.
Accordingly, the district secured a budget of 13.7 billion KRW through the Traditional Market Revitalization Support Project (Parking Environment Improvement section) and additionally received support from Seoul City's 2019 Majang Urban Regeneration Project budget, raising a total of 19.1 billion KRW for parking lot construction. Notably, floors 2 to 4 of the parking lot will include convenience facilities and office spaces for urban regeneration, allowing visiting customers to use them in various ways.
The Seongsu-dong ‘Ttukseom Retention Pond Public Parking Lot’ was created by covering the retention pond starting December 2020, after securing 13.7 billion KRW in national and city funds through the 2019 Life SOC Project competition.
The adjacent area is actively undergoing urban environmental changes such as the formation of knowledge industry complexes like apartment-style factories, redevelopment and construction in Seongsu-dong, and the Seongsu Strategic Maintenance Project. By covering the nearby retention pond, a large-scale parking lot was proactively created to solve parking difficulties and prepare in advance for high traffic demand.
Once the parking lots open in April, both locations are expected to provide great convenience to users with significantly increased parking spaces. According to district officials, visitors to Majang Livestock Market, a Seongdong landmark with over 2 million annual visitors, as well as citizens visiting Seongsu-dong?known as the ‘Brooklyn of Korea,’ a rising center of industry and cultural arts in Seoul Forest?will be able to conveniently use their private vehicles.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We are very pleased to deliver good news to residents who have experienced inconvenience due to a lack of parking spaces by creating large-scale parking lots in Majang-dong and Seongsu-dong.” He added, “We will continue to make efforts and pay attention to providing residents with a convenient and safe transportation environment.”
Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) has been selected for Seoul City's ‘2022 Our Neighborhood Store Artterior’ project and is taking steps to revitalize the depressed alley commercial district.
‘Our Neighborhood Store Artterior’ is a compound word of Art and Interior, a project that improves the design of the interior and exterior of stores and products operated by local small business owners using the talents of young artists.
This project targets 41 small business stores in the Myeongok Alley-type Shopping District, each with fewer than five regular employees and generating sales through customer visits.
This area was registered as an alley-type shopping district last year and has been promoting facility improvements. It was selected as a project target to induce commercial district revitalization.
Subsequently, the district plans to select 15 local young artists and match them with participating stores. The artists will analyze the surrounding commercial district and reflect the opinions of small business owners to update signage, signboards, and interior design according to current trends.
They will also create logos that match the store image, making the stores more sophisticated and creative.
The support fund has increased by 500,000 KRW compared to last year, with a maximum of 1.5 million KRW per store. Participating artists will be assigned 3 to 4 stores over 2 to 3 months and receive approximately 4.6 million KRW in activity fees.
Additionally, after the Artterior project concludes, the district plans to promote participating small business stores using power bloggers and hold events encouraging the use of Gwangjin Love Gift Certificates to support sales improvement.
Previously, in 2019, Gwangjin-gu was selected for the ‘Our Neighborhood Store Artterior Project,’ where 12 local artists participated and renovated 24 stores in the Migaro area.
Kim Seon-gap, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people visiting stores is steadily decreasing, deepening the difficulties of small business owners in alley commercial districts.” He added, “Through this project, we hope to transform the alley commercial district into a distinctive and desirable place, and provide local young artists with opportunities to showcase their talents.”
Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) is launching a health recovery project to protect the natural ecosystem of Songpa Dullegil, which is loved by residents.
Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “Completed last July after 50 years, Songpa Dullegil is a rare waterside walking trail in downtown Seoul and a treasure trove of ecology where various species such as the natural monument otter and common kestrel live.” He added, “We prepared this project to protect a healthy natural ecosystem and create a Songpa Dullegil where people and nature coexist.”
Representative invasive plants on Songpa Dullegil include Mile-a-minute vine (Persicaria perfoliata), Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), common ragweed, and Western horseweed (Conyza canadensis). These plants are known for their vigorous reproduction, hindering the growth of other plants, serving as hosts for pests, and causing respiratory diseases, posing serious risks.
Accordingly, on March 25, the district conducted invasive plant removal activities essential for maintaining the balance of the plant ecosystem.
About 70 members of environmental organizations and volunteers active in Songpa-gu participated, focusing on the Tancheon section of Songpa Dullegil, an ecological landscape conservation area, removing Mile-a-minute vine and Oriental bittersweet, and creating an environment where street trees and native plants can grow.
From April, the district plans to focus on intensive management such as uprooting and cutting stems of invasive plants.
The district will regularly conduct invasive plant removal activities once a month on four sections of Songpa Dullegil until August this year. It will also distribute field management guides for invasive plants to each community service center, promoting seasonal management methods and precautions.
Starting in September, the district will monitor the habitat environment of invasive plants and operate a ‘pilot garden’ by planting native plants such as porcelain berry in removal areas to help preserve a healthy ecological environment.
Those who wish to participate in invasive plant removal activities can apply through the Songpa-gu Volunteer Center website.
Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “Along with the Songpa Dullegil ‘Season 2 Project,’ we will strengthen efforts to protect the ecosystem throughout the entire trail, making it a healthy habitat for flora and fauna and a place for ecological experience and relaxation for residents.”
Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) announced on the 28th that it recently conducted a joint public-private safety inspection of 49 sites, including 24 construction sites, 6 demolition sites, and 19 steep slopes in the area.
This was carried out due to the increased possibility of safety accidents in spring caused by repeated freezing and thawing of the ground during winter, followed by rising temperatures and rainfall.
