[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] A case in which the head of a smelting plant was prosecuted for discharging cadmium-contaminated water, a first-class carcinogen, into the Nakdong River more than 1,000 times over six years was selected as an outstanding monthly criminal division case.
The Supreme Prosecutors' Office announced on the 23rd that it analyzed cases handled by prosecutors' offices nationwide in February and selected five outstanding criminal division cases.
The Criminal Division 3 of Daegu District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Je-seong) indicted eight people, including the head of a company that illegally discharged large amounts of cadmium-contaminated water, a first-class carcinogen, into the upper reaches of the Nakdong River. They also achieved results by establishing and operating a ‘one-stop system’ covering the entire process of responding to environmental crimes in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and local governments.
The Criminal Division 5 of Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Yoon-seon) non-custodially indicted a police officer on charges of abuse of authority for illegally detaining a foreign suspect arrested under a separate arrest warrant for nine hours in the narcotics investigation unit office to improve poor performance. The police officer was investigated for forcibly collecting urine and hair samples from the suspect.
The Criminal Division 2 of Pyeongtaek Branch, Suwon District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Park Eun-hye) prosecuted a group that established a bomb company and even presented a ‘fake boss’ who falsely confessed to being the real culprit to investigative agencies, issuing false tax invoices worth 5.6 billion won. Although the actual boss was not properly investigated until the case was transferred to the prosecution, the prosecution uncovered the full extent of the crime by securing multiple facts that the real boss directed the crime and gained profits through mobile analysis and account tracking.
