Shinan-gun, Nation's First Aluminum Onboard Marine Debris Collection Facility Established
Environmental Protection through Microplastic Reduction and Recycling
[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, has completed the installation of eight aluminum onboard marine debris collection stations, the first of their kind nationwide.
The county replaced the existing PE material with eco-friendly aluminum floating structures, which are expected to reduce microplastics, protect the marine environment, and allow for recycling even after long-term use, achieving two benefits at once.
The marine debris onboard collection station installation project involves creating facilities where various discarded fishing nets and gear generated during fishing activities can be stored on floating structures in the sea.
This project aims to eliminate the inconvenience for fishermen of having to bring marine debris generated during fishing to land-based storage locations, prevent illegal dumping and re-entry into the sea, and contribute to maintaining a clean marine environment by improving the efficiency of marine debris collection and disposal.
Sinan-gun plans to invest a total of 600 million KRW this year to additionally install six aluminum onboard marine debris collection stations to maintain a pleasant marine environment and achieve zero marine debris.
A Sinan-gun official stated, “We will make every effort to secure government support budgets for marine environment conservation and efficient management and to achieve zero marine debris,” and requested cooperation from fishermen.
