[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Sung) will hold an information session on the ‘Our Neighborhood Education Autonomy Committee’.
The district announced on the 18th, “Last year, we were selected for the ‘2022 Future Education District’ contest hosted by the Ministry of Education and are conducting activities for the ‘Our Neighborhood Education Autonomy Committee.’ We are holding this information session to inform residents about the activities being implemented for the first time this year.”
The ‘Future Education District’ project supports the creation of an educational cooperation ecosystem involving the public, private, and academic sectors, and helps establish an educational environment tailored to regional characteristics.
Last year, the district was selected in the ‘2022 Future Education District’ contest, which targeted 191 innovative education districts nationwide, securing a budget of 100 million KRW to carry out activities for the ‘Our Neighborhood Education Autonomy Committee.’
The ‘Our Neighborhood Education Autonomy Committee,’ conducted as a private subsidy project, refers to a communication platform where various educational stakeholders discuss to build and activate education governance suited to the characteristics of each neighborhood.
Main activities include holding education public forums by neighborhood, discovering educational agendas and discussing current issues, and village-school cooperation projects. A private subsidy project contest will be held at the end of March.
Before fully launching activities, an information session is arranged to promote the project and encourage residents’ participation.
On the 24th, sessions will be held at 4 p.m. for Garibong-dong, Guro-dong, Sindorim-dong, and Gocheok-dong; on the 25th, for Oryu-dong, Gaebong-dong, Sugung-dong, and Hang-dong. To prevent COVID-19, the sessions will be conducted online via Zoom.
Anyone interested in education can scan the QR code on the promotional poster or apply via Google Forms by the 22nd.
A Guro-gu official said, “Through this information session, we will guide the main project plans of the ‘Our Neighborhood Education Autonomy Committee’ and the private contest projects. We hope for the interest and participation of many residents.”
Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) is operating ‘You & A,’ a second language mentoring program learned through culture, targeting 100 middle school students in the district.
‘You & A’ is an abbreviation of Europe & Asia and has been conducted by the district since 2017 in cooperation with the ‘Korea University Student Education Donation Group.’
Courses in five languages?French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish?are held using the online video conferencing program Google Meet, with 20 participants per course.
University student mentors, selected by the education donation group based on their major in the language, relevant certifications, and local study experience, conduct classes so that students encountering a second language for the first time can participate without burden.
Classes are held once a week on weekdays from 6 to 8 p.m., running for 14 weeks from April 4 to July 8. Each language offers 8 language classes and 4 cultural classes, totaling 12 sessions. Two weeks during school exam periods are off.
French classes are on Mondays, German on Tuesdays, Chinese on Wednesdays, Japanese on Thursdays, and Spanish on Fridays, with mentoring days designated for each language.
Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the 31st of this month. Any middle school students in grades 1 to 3 residing or attending school in the district can apply to learn one language per person.
Those interested can apply by calling the Seodaemun-gu Office Education Support Division or through the Seodaemun-gu Lifelong Learning Portal.
Mayor Moon Seok-jin of Seodaemun-gu said, “We hope many middle school students participate in this mentoring program, which helps them learn a second language, understand other cultures, and find their aptitude and career path in the language field.”
