[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] BMW Group held its annual press conference on the 16th (local time) at its headquarters in Munich, Germany, and announced that it plans to produce 15 electric vehicle models this year. Along with this, it aims to sell a cumulative total of 2 million units by 2025.
BMW Group plans to produce 15 pure electric vehicle models this year, including those at the final stage before production. This will cover 90% of the segments currently held by the group. In addition to existing models such as the BMW i4, iX, and MINI Electric, pure electric models will be included in four key models: the 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, and X3. The new 7 Series will also play an important role in 2022 with the launch of the new i7.
BMW Group's strategy is to expand the electric mobility market and secure leadership through the New Class. Based on this, the group plans to sell more than 2 million pure electric vehicles cumulatively by the end of 2025. Furthermore, it aims to deliver a total of 10 million pure electric vehicles to customers by 2030.
Additionally, the group will announce details of its independently developed 6th generation new battery technology within this year. It also plans to unveil some of the next-generation connectivity and user interaction technologies of the New Class within the next year.
From the mid-2020s onward, the proportion of hydrogen fuel cell drivetrains within BMW Group is expected to gradually increase. The group is systematically advancing the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology to provide new options for sustainable personal mobility. It has already announced that the New Class can also be equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell-based electric drivetrain.
Meanwhile, in 2021, BMW Group's revenue, profit, and net income all saw significant increases. Sales volume rose by 8.4% year-on-year to 2,521,514 units. Of these, 13%, or 328,314 units, were electrified vehicles. Group revenue increased by 12.4% year-on-year to 111.239 billion euros.
