[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is relocating the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office from Paldal Mountain in Suwon to Gwanggyo New Town in Suwon for the first time in 55 years.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 14th that it will carry out the relocation work of the new government office seven times from April 14 to May 29, utilizing Thursdays to Sundays each week.
The Gwanggyo New Government Office Convergence Town, which houses the new Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office and the Gyeonggi Provincial Council office, consists of four basement floors and 25 above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 166,337㎡. A total project cost of 470.8 billion KRW was invested, with construction starting in September 2017 and completion in November last year. The Gyeonggi Provincial Council began relocating in January this year and officially opened on February 7.
The department layout in the new government office was arranged to maximize operational efficiency by placing departments under the same bureau on the same floor as much as possible.
Special facilities such as the investigation rooms and evidence storage rooms of the Special Judicial Police Unit were also located near their respective management departments. To ensure a safe working environment against infectious diseases including COVID-19, additional handwashing stations were secured?six per floor?and ventilation performance was enhanced.
To minimize work disruption due to the relocation, the province will conduct the move in seven phases by May 29. Additionally, to prevent security incidents such as damage to records, approximately 100,000 volumes of records will be moved separately from office furniture.
The province plans to prepare detailed relocation schedules by bureau this month and will conduct prior training related to furniture relocation by April.
The current Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office building has been in use for 55 years since relocating from Gwanghwamun, Seoul in 1967, and was recently recognized for its architectural and cultural historical value, being registered as a national cultural heritage site in August 2017.
Meanwhile, after relocating to the Gwanggyo new government office, the current Gyeonggi Provincial Government site (Paldal-gu, Suwon) will be developed into the Gyeonggi Provincial Archives and an integrated data center. Additionally, some departments such as the Construction Headquarters and 17 centers established by the province will move in. The Paldal-gu government office consists of 10 buildings with a total floor area of 54,074㎡.
