Police Crack Down on 1,383 Election Offenders
75 Referred, 1,155 Under Investigation
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The police have cracked down on 1,383 suspects (1,170 cases) related to the 20th presidential election, referring 75 of them to the prosecution, among whom 7 were detained. This represents an increase of as many as 427 suspects compared to the previous 19th presidential election. This is attributed to the rise in fake news as the election was marred by mutual slander and negativity until the final stages.
The National Police Agency announced the investigation status of election-related suspects for the "20th Presidential Election." Since January 8, the police have operated "Election Crime Investigation Situation Rooms" at 277 police stations nationwide to conduct crackdowns. Looking at the election suspects by investigation clues related to this election, there were 534 reports, 518 accusations, and 138 investigations initiated by the Central Election Commission. By type, the most common was damage to banners and posters with 625 suspects, followed by dissemination of false information (496 suspects), election violence (66 suspects), and early election campaigning (28 suspects). The police explained that the dissemination of false information increased about fivefold (416%) compared to the previous presidential election.

The police plan to continue investigating the remaining 1,155 election suspects. Considering that the statute of limitations for election cases is six months from the election day, they plan to conclude all cases within this period. The police stated, "With the 8th local elections scheduled for June, we will strengthen intelligence gathering and crackdowns on election crimes to ensure the establishment of a fair election culture."
