National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage Presents Quality Standards for Hanji in Cultural Heritage Repair and Restoration
Publication of the Report 'Research on Quality Standards for Hanji Used in Cultural Heritage Restoration - Main Text'
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage has consolidated the results of its five-year project, "Research on Quality Standards for Traditional Hanji Paper for Cultural Heritage Restoration." On the 8th, it published the report titled "Research on Quality Standards for Hanji Paper for Cultural Heritage Restoration ? Main Text," which identifies the fundamental technologies of traditional Hanji production and can be applied in cultural heritage preservation and restoration sites. The report provides a detailed look at the quality standards for Hanji paper used in cultural heritage repair and restoration, based on scientifically verified results of traditional Hanji production techniques (including basic investigations, raw materials and manufacturing processes, physical property evaluations, and material stability studies). A representative from the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage stated, "This will provide scientific evidence for the use of Hanji paper in cultural heritage restoration sites and contribute to restoring the original form of cultural assets." They also mentioned, "Based on these research results, we plan to propose revisions to the Cultural Heritage Repair Standard Specifications and the Korean Industrial Standards (KS)."
