Lee Jae-myung "Doubling to 12 Super Large Helicopters for Wildfire Suppression"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced on the 6th that he "proposes organizing volunteer groups centered around the Democratic Party's local committees nationwide" in response to the wildfires on the East Coast.
Through Facebook on the same day, Lee said, "We must share the pain of the residents in the affected areas," making this proposal. He added, "Although the election is just around the corner, we must not postpone sharing the suffering with the people," and expressed hope for "active participation from party members and supporters."
He continued, "I heard there is a proposal among Democratic Party lawmakers to contribute 50% of their salaries as relief funds," and wrote, "I hope more lawmakers will join in." He also said, "Fortunately, the wind is weaker today compared to yesterday," and added, "I sincerely pray that aggressive firefighting efforts will be able to control the flames." Later, Lee posted again stating, "Currently, there are 6 super-large helicopters for wildfire suppression, and they will be immediately doubled to 12."
At a campaign rally held at the Seongbukcheon Fountain Square in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, Lee said, "Our country is not short of money. Each helicopter costs only about 25 billion won," and added, "Since even super-large helicopters are not enough, why don't we buy firefighting aircraft to use ourselves and provide support to Southeast Asia in urgent situations?"
He also shared his visit to the wildfire site in the early morning of the 5th, saying, "There were people who lost their homes in last year's flood disaster and only received 1 million won in support, so they rebuilt their houses at their own expense, but they lost them again to the fire and were crying," and stated, "I think it is better to provide much more support to those affected by large-scale disasters."
