Gyeongsangnam-do Rolls Up Sleeves to Reduce Greenhouse Gases... Supports 'Cool Roofs' to Alleviate Heatwaves
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Ju-cheol In] Gyeongsangnam-do has rolled up its sleeves to reduce greenhouse gases, the main culprit of global warming.
On the 4th, Gyeongnam Province announced that it will promote the ‘Heatwave Mitigation Roof (Cool Roof) Support Project’ to prevent heatwave damage in summer while improving the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The cool roof support project, which continues from last year, involves applying insulating paint with solar and heat reflection effects on rooftops. According to Gyeongnam Province, the cool roof project can reduce the building surface temperature by 15 to 30℃ and indoor temperature by 3 to 4℃.
When indoor temperature decreases, summer cooling costs are saved by about 20%, and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by about 6%. This year, the province secured a budget of 207 million KRW to support the heatwave mitigation roof cool roof project for 138 households in 13 cities and counties.
This year’s budget has doubled compared to last year. It will provide support of 15,000 KRW per square meter, up to 100㎡ and a maximum of 1.5 million KRW, for 138 residential single-family homes in the province, including climate-vulnerable groups.
