[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] Japan's Ministry of Defense announced on the 2nd that a helicopter presumed to be Russian violated its airspace.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the helicopter presumed to be Russian intruded into Japanese airspace over the sea in front of the Nemuro Peninsula in Hokkaido at around 10:23 a.m. that day.
In response, Japan Air Self-Defense Force fighter jets were scrambled urgently to issue a warning in the airspace, and the helicopter presumed to be Russian violated Japanese airspace for several tens of seconds before leaving, Kyodo News reported.
Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a stern protest with Russia through diplomatic channels regarding the airspace violation and urged prevention of recurrence. It also stated that it is verifying where the helicopter came from and whether the airspace violation is related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Kyodo News assessed that "Russia, which continues its military invasion of Ukraine, may have provoked tensions in Asia as well."
