View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The enrollment rate for new students, including additional recruitment for the 2022 academic year college admissions, is expected to slightly increase compared to the previous year but remain lower than the year before last.
According to Jongro Academy on the 28th, 37 universities conducted additional recruitment by the 27th. All are universities located in provincial areas. Among the universities that conducted additional recruitment, 26.2% were under-enrolled. Including universities that did not announce competition rates, the scale of under-enrolled universities could be even larger.
This year's enrollment rate is expected to slightly rise compared to the 2021 academic year enrollment rate (94.9%), which experienced a large-scale under-enrollment crisis. However, it is projected to be around 96-97%, lower than the 2020 academic year (98.9%). The announcement of additional recruitment successful candidates was made by the 27th, and registration will be conducted on the 28th.
The average competition rate for additional recruitment in medical-related fields is 367.16 to 1. There were 9,179 applicants for 25 spots. Kyungpook National University’s Department of Pharmacy (1 spot) had the highest competition rate at 759 to 1, followed by ▲Ajou University Department of Pharmacy 677 to 1 ▲Jeju University Department of Pharmacy 629 to 1 ▲Chungbuk National University Department of Veterinary Medicine 609 to 1.
Major universities in the Seoul metropolitan area recorded an average competition rate of 230 to 1. Myongji University, which is preparing to reapply for rehabilitation procedures, had the lowest competition rate. The competition rates were highest at ▲Incheon University 982.50 to 1 ▲Kyonggi University 816 to 1 ▲University of Seoul 735.17 to 1. Myongji University had the lowest at 95.47 to 1.
The competition rate for additional recruitment at provincial flagship national universities is 72.35 to 1, about one-third of the average competition rate of major universities in Seoul and the metropolitan area. Among provincial national universities, ▲Chungbuk National University 256.73 to 1 ▲Pusan National University 239.25 to 1 were the highest. Jeonnam National University was the lowest at 16.64 to 1, with a significant gap between its Gwangju Campus (130.36 to 1) and Yeosu Campus (3.58 to 1), which lowered the overall average competition rate.
Meanwhile, the number of current high school seniors this year is 436,091, about 6,000 fewer than the 442,989 in the 2022 academic year, indicating that the difficulty in filling new student quotas is expected to continue in the 2023 academic year.

Oh Jong-woon, Evaluation Director at Jongro Academy, explained, "Although the situation has somewhat improved compared to the 2021 college admissions, which was practically the worst in university new student enrollment, there were still universities under-enrolled despite the 27th being the effective last day of additional recruitment. A severe polarization in application rates between medical fields nationwide, major universities in the metropolitan area, and provincial universities has appeared."
