[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Seoyoung] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, criticized Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, saying that his remarks on the Ukraine invasion are no different from justifying Japan's invasion during the Japanese colonial period.
On the 26th, Lee posted on his Facebook, "According to candidate Lee's thinking, who criticizes the Ukrainian president for trying to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) without siding with Russia and justifies Russia's invasion, it is no different from saying that the Japanese colonial period came because the Joseon royal family did not side with Japan and justifying Japan's invasion."
Lee also pointed out, "It is said that young Ukrainian soldiers on the Black Sea island refused to surrender and fought to the death," adding, "What should be reflected upon them are the righteous armies and independence fighters who resisted Japanese colonial rule, and candidate Lee's finger-pointing is not something that can be said to the resolute and grieving Ukrainian people in front of their deaths."
He continued, "If candidate Lee rides a time machine back to the late Joseon period, will he blame Emperor Gojong and Joseon's incompetence as the cause of Japan's invasion and scold our ancestors who fought as righteous armies and independence fighters?" He criticized, "Just as the Democratic Party ignored the Hong Kong democracy movement, it seems they are trying to glorify this Russian invasion by blaming Ukraine," emphasizing, "At least political leaders, if not merchants, should prioritize democracy and human rights as their highest values."
