[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] China fiercely criticized the Joe Biden administration, accusing the United States of instigating Sino-Russian conflicts in relation to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The state-run Global Times reported on the 25th in an article titled "The United States Provoking Sino-Russian Conflict by Exploiting the Ukraine Crisis," stating that the U.S. is distorting China's neutral stance.
China emphasized that it has maintained a neutral position by calling for dialogue regarding the Ukraine situation, and argued that the U.S. military intervention in Ukraine is tantamount to violating the sovereignty of other countries, thus lacking the qualification to criticize China.
The outlet cited government-affiliated scholars who criticized the U.S., saying that rather than taking measures to prevent the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the U.S. has provoked and exaggerated the crisis. The article also reported that Ned Price, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, said the previous day that all responsible countries worldwide, including China, have an obligation to exert influence on Russia. Price pointed out China's consistent stance on respecting sovereign states and territorial integrity.
In response, Hua Chunying, spokesperson (deputy director) of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rebutted, saying, "The United States has mercilessly interfered in China's internal affairs such as Xinjiang Uyghur, Hong Kong, and Taiwan," adding, "The U.S. uses democracy and human rights as pretexts, and its perspectives on sovereignty and territorial integrity differ from China's."
Chui Heng, a professor at East China Normal University, said, "The first to violate the principles of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity was the United States," and added, "The U.S. is distorting China's neutral position to shift the criticism it deserves onto China."
Wang Yiwei, a professor at Renmin University, claimed, "The United States wants to involve China in the Ukraine issue," and stated, "The U.S. wants to make China, following Russia, a major adversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)." He also pointed out the need to closely watch the NATO summit scheduled for June. He added that NATO plans to establish a strategic action plan through 2030 at the summit.
