View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A man in his 60s was sentenced to prison for hiding gold bars worth approximately 16 billion KRW on specific parts of his body and smuggling them into and out of the country hundreds of times.
On the 22nd, the Criminal Division 15 of the Incheon District Court (Chief Judge Lee Gyu-hoon) announced that it sentenced Mr. A (64), who was indicted for violating customs laws, to 1 year and 6 months in prison. The court also imposed a fine of 684.76 million KRW and confiscation of 15.8767 billion KRW.
The court stated, "Mr. A repeatedly smuggled gold bars in and out over a long period, with the total amount reaching 15.8767 billion KRW, which is a very serious offense," and added, "He actively induced many people to act as carriers of the gold bars."
However, the court explained the sentencing reason by saying, "The sentence was determined considering that this is his first offense."
Mr. A was tried on charges of smuggling 125.4 kg of gold bars worth 6.1 billion KRW from China to Incheon International Airport by hiding them in his anus 121 times from November 2015 to April 2017. Additionally, from March 2016 to March 2017, he is accused of smuggling out 102.6 kg of gold bars worth 5.3 billion KRW to Japan from Incheon International Airport in 109 instances, totaling approximately 9.6 billion KRW worth of gold bars smuggled out.
