Kim Yong-pan "Promotion for Police and Fire Officials Scheduled for Promotion Should Be Recognized in Case of Death in the Line of Duty"
Representative Proposal of the "Police Officer Act Amendment" and "Firefighter Act Amendment"
[Asia Economy Reporter Geum Bo-ryeong] A bill has been proposed to recognize police and fire officers who passed the promotion review but died in the line of duty before their promotion appointment as having been promoted the day before their death.
On the 22nd, Kim Yong-pan, a member of the People Power Party, announced that he had jointly proposed the "Police Officer Act Amendment" and the "Fire Officer Act Amendment," which recognize the promotion of police and fire officers who die in the line of duty while scheduled for promotion.
This amendment emphasizes that promotions and compensations due to death in the line of duty should be based on the rank scheduled for promotion.
According to Representative Kim, under current law, even if an officer passes the promotion review, promotion appointments are often delayed for a considerable period due to personnel bottlenecks. Furthermore, even if promotion is scheduled months or days later, if the officer dies before the appointment, special promotion and compensation are conducted based on the rank held at the time of death.

In response, Representative Kim stated, "This is to provide at least the minimum national respect to police and fire officers who devoted themselves to the country and the people and died in the line of duty," adding, "We will continue to strive to improve laws and systems that are somewhat inadequate and do not reflect reality."
