Chungcheong-bound Shim: "Daedeok Complex to Transform into Green Innovation Complex"
Appeal for Support of Green Transition Pledge
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Sim Sang-jung, the Justice Party candidate, visited Chungnam and Daejeon on the 22nd to promote her green transition pledge and appeal for support.
During a campaign rally in Daejeon that morning, Candidate Sim stated, "We will transform the Daedeok Research Complex into a Green Innovation Research Complex, creating a proper innovation city that drives Daejeon's growth, rather than just raising real estate prices." She added, "Since Daejeon is a region concentrated with nuclear research facilities, we will also address citizen safety issues related to radioactive waste."
In this presidential campaign schedule, after initially visiting traditional marginalized groups such as laborers and the underprivileged, Candidate Sim immediately went to Daejeon, a science city, following the first TV debate hosted by the National Election Commission, which is interpreted as an effort to firmly establish the agenda of ‘green industrial transition.’ She also emphasized during the debate held the previous day, "The key words for the great transition economy are resolving inequality and ‘green transition.’"
The green transition campaign will continue into the afternoon. Candidate Sim added that she would block the construction of a civilian airport at Seosan Haemi Airfield, formerly operated by the Air Force, to cut carbon emissions from aircraft. At a rally at the Cheonan Terminal intersection, she plans to emphasize, "We will make Chungnam, which has the highest number of coal-fired power plants, a leading region for climate justice."
Regarding the impact of job losses due to the green transition, Candidate Sim has proposed measures to resolve this issue. This is in response to the government's 9th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand, which calls for the phased shutdown of the Taean Thermal Power Plant starting in 2025.
