"Ukraine Requests UN Security Council Emergency Meeting"
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] On the 21st (local time), Ukraine requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address threats from Russia, AFP reported.
According to the report, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated on his Twitter, "In accordance with Article 6 of the Budapest Memorandum, I have officially requested the UN Security Council member states to convene a meeting immediately." He emphasized that the Security Council must take substantive measures to guarantee Ukraine's security.
The Budapest Memorandum, signed in 1994 by Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, promises to guarantee Ukraine's territorial integrity and political independence in exchange for Ukraine transferring all its nuclear weapons to Russia.
