[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Woo Hyung-chan, Chair of the Transportation Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan Council (Yangcheon-gu District 3), contributed to the apprehension of a wanted person on February 19, following his role in subduing a convenience store knife attacker in June 2018.
On the afternoon of the 19th, near Gyodae Station, while driving his passenger car making a right turn, Woo was involved in an accident where a motorcycle following behind collided with the passenger side of his car.
Concerned about the motorcyclist’s injuries and to ensure prompt accident handling, Woo immediately reported the incident to emergency services 119 and 112 in succession. An ambulance and police arrived quickly, and during the investigation of the accident, it was confirmed that the motorcyclist was a wanted person with an outstanding indictment.
Chairman Woo Hyung-chan stated, “It is important to respond quickly according to the manual in any accident,” adding, “Taking follow-up measures to prevent serious injury is crucial, and securing the custody of a wanted person as in this case is a very special result of swift action,” emphasizing the importance of prompt response.
Prior to this, ahead of the 2018 local elections, Woo had subdued a man who was wielding a knife and causing a disturbance to a woman at a convenience store, together with a university student.
Woo recalled, “After finishing election campaigning, I stopped by a convenience store in the evening and saw the suspect brandishing a knife at a woman who was bleeding,” adding, “The suspect threatened me to stay out of it, but hearing the woman’s plea for help, I had no choice but to immediately intervene.”
Subsequently, the Yangcheon Police Station recognized Woo Hyung-chan’s contribution to the arrest of the attempted murder suspect and awarded him a commendation. (Photo)
Woo advised, “Remembering the basic manual in any accident can be very helpful,” explaining, “When subduing the convenience store knife attacker, I first called 119 and 112 and waited, but intervened when the situation became urgent. Similarly, in this traffic accident, regardless of its scale, I promptly contacted 119, 112, and the insurance company in that order.”
