SKT to Showcase 5G Communication Infrastructure Technology with Samsung, Ericsson, and Nokia

[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] SK Telecom announced on the 21st that it will showcase the development achievements of 5G communication infrastructure virtualization technology in collaboration with Samsung Electronics, Ericsson, and Nokia at the mobile and IT exhibition 'Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022.'
SK Telecom plans to demonstrate its 5G technological capabilities to global customers under the keyword ‘5G & Beyond,’ allowing a comprehensive view of the evolution of next-generation 5G network technology.
The core focus is on the development and demonstration of cloud virtualized radio access network (vRAN) based on 5G wireless networks. This technology installs network functions of base station access network equipment (RAN) in software form. Similar to installing software on a computer, various network functions can be installed on general servers, reducing the physical time and cost required for base station management.
5G network equipment is broadly divided into RU (Radio Unit), DU (Distributed Unit), and CU (Centralized Unit). By utilizing vRAN, DU and CU, excluding the RU which directly exchanges data with smartphones in 5G mobile communication, can be operated in software form.
While traditional base station construction and management were carried out in different ways according to each equipment manufacturer’s specifications, vRAN allows common software to be installed, removed, and upgraded on commercially available servers (general-purpose servers). This increases equipment compatibility. Through this, telecom operators and equipment manufacturers can process 5G base station management tasks more quickly and extensively.

Jong-kwan Park, Head of Infrastructure Technology at SK Telecom, stated, "We plan to lead open ecosystem-related technologies that allow participation from various communication equipment manufacturers and contribute to expanding business areas where domestic small and medium equipment companies can participate." He added, "Together with our partners, we will showcase SK Telecom’s advanced technology leading the innovation of 5G networks."
