Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology Ranks No. 1 Among 'Emerging Universities' in Korea... 11th Worldwide in Universities Under 50 Years Since Establishment
UK University Ranking Agency THE Evaluates Citation Impact and Internationalization Scores of 539 Universities Worldwide
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) ranked first in South Korea in the 2022 Young University Rankings announced by the UK university evaluation agency THE (Times Higher Education).
The Young University Rankings evaluate 'young' universities worldwide that have been established for 50 years or less. Considering their short history, the weight of reputation is lowered, and the evaluation is based on 13 indicators. The 2022 evaluation covered 539 universities from 74 countries.
UNIST jumped two spots from third place domestically last year to claim the top position. The domestic ranking was UNIST, POSTECH, GIST, Ajou University, and Incheon National University in order.
KAIST, which was first last year, was classified as a university established over 50 years ago and was excluded from this year's evaluation.
The global ranking dropped one spot from 10th last year to 11th. The overall first place was Paris Sciences et Lettres University (PSL). Following were Nanyang Technological University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University forming the top five.
UNIST continued its overall upward trend in scores across evaluation categories. Scores for education, research, industry income, and internationalization all increased compared to last year. Citation impact and internationalization scores were the highest among domestic universities.
