[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Korean figure skaters Yu Yeong (Surigo) and Kim Yerim (Surigo) aim for medal contention and top rankings at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
On the 15th, Yu Yeong and Kim Yerim scored 70.34 points (6th place) and 67.78 points (9th place), respectively, in the short program. They will compete in the women's singles free skating on the 17th at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China.
If Yu Yeong performs well in the free skating, she could achieve a top 5 finish or higher, surpassing the record set by men's singles skater Cha Junhwan (Korea University) at this event.
Yu Yeong is 9.5 points behind Kaori Sakamoto (Japan), who placed 3rd in the short program with 79.84 points, so a strong free skating performance could put her in medal contention.
In women's singles, "Figure Queen" Kim Yuna (retired) won the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Choi Da-bin (retired) placed 7th.
