Severe Cases and Deaths Also Rising... Home Treatment Patients Exceed 240,000
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] The number of new COVID-19 cases has exceeded 50,000 for six consecutive days, setting a record high. Amid the spread of the Omicron variant, a doubling phenomenon is occurring, with the number of cases doubling every week.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 15th at midnight that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 57,177, bringing the total cumulative cases to 1,462,421. The number of new cases increased by 2,558 from the previous day (54,619), marking a record high.
Due to the Omicron variant pandemic, the number of confirmed cases is doubling every week. The new cases reported on this day are approximately 1.6 times the 36,717 cases reported a week ago on the 8th, and about 3.2 times the 18,338 cases reported two weeks ago on the 1st.
As confirmed cases surge, the number of severe and critical patients is also increasing. As of midnight on this day, the number of severe and critical patients was 314, up by 8 from the previous day (306), marking two consecutive days with over 300 patients. The number of deaths also tripled from 21 the previous day to 61. The cumulative death toll stands at 7,163, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.49%.
Asymptomatic and mild cases are also rapidly increasing. As of midnight on this day, the number of patients receiving home treatment was 245,940, an increase of 13,854 from the previous day (232,086).

Among locally transmitted cases, Gyeonggi reported 17,236 cases, Seoul 12,402 cases, and Incheon 4,904 cases, totaling 34,542 cases (60.6%) in the metropolitan area alone. Non-metropolitan areas reported a total of 22,470 cases (39.4%), including Busan 3,080, Gyeongnam 2,765, Daegu 2,362, Chungnam 2,218, Gyeongbuk 1,755, Gwangju 1,599, Jeonbuk 1,579, Daejeon 1,575, Chungbuk 1,322, Jeonnam 1,299, Gangwon 1,174, Ulsan 776, Jeju 551, and Sejong 415.
