After Myongji University’s Rehabilitation Suspension, Backlash: "Rehabilitation Process Uncertain, I Give Up Enrollment"
Confusion Among Prospective New Students Receiving Acceptance Notices
Increase in Additional Recruitment Expected Due to Enrollment Withdrawals
Concerns Over Large-Scale Dropouts at Myongji Jeonmundae
"Because of Myongji University's rehabilitation process, I'm anxious and considering going to a specialized college in 'In Seoul (located in Seoul)."
"I'm debating whether to go to Myongji University or ○○ University (a metropolitan area university), but it seems like there will be continuous talk about Myongji University's bankruptcy."
The suspension of the rehabilitation process of Myongji Academy, the school corporation of Myongji University, has thrown prospective freshmen who have been notified of acceptance into confusion. Since Myongji University began accepting applications to forfeit admission from 10 a.m. on the 14th, posts about canceling or giving up admission have been continuously appearing on student communities. It is also expected that the number of students who withdraw after being accepted to multiple schools, including Myongji University regular admissions, will increase compared to the past.
A high school admissions counselor in Seoul said, "Until last year, the perception was that the rehabilitation process of Myongji University would not be a problem for metropolitan universities, and even if accepted, it was not to the extent of considering giving up admission due to foundation issues," adding, "If there is an option to choose a similar university, it is better to choose another school, but if Myongji University is the only acceptance, it is difficult to recommend choosing a specialized college or retaking the exam." Some students in the community said they gave up Myongji University and chose a metropolitan campus of a Seoul-based university.
The number of additional recruitment spots at Myongji University is also expected to increase compared to last year. In the 2021 academic year, when the additional recruitment scale was the largest ever, the number of additional recruits was 30. There may be an increase in students moving to mid-tier metropolitan universities of similar levels such as Kyonggi University, Gachon University, and Dankook University.
Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongro Academy, said, "If students are accepted to both Myongji University and another school, it is expected that 100% will leave, and the number of additional successful candidates will inevitably increase due to the dropout. Even if they are accepted to universities slightly higher or lower than Myongji University, there is a high possibility of leaving due to psychological pressure. Since there has been no precedent of bankruptcy among mid-tier metropolitan universities, students will find it difficult to make an easy judgment," he explained.
The shock to Myongji College is even greater. The enrollment rate for new students at specialized colleges is only 84.4%, and as the number of additional recruits at general universities increases, many regular admission students at specialized colleges also transfer to general universities. CEO Lim explained, "In the case of Myongji College, it will be more difficult to recruit students, and the possibility of registered students leaving is 2 to 3 times higher than that of Myongji University."

Myongji University will announce additional successful candidates four times from today until the 20th, and if vacancies occur due to registration forfeiture after additional selection, it will conduct further recruitment starting on the 22nd. Myongji Academy plans to prepare a rehabilitation plan including the integration of Myongji University and Myongji College, and the sale of revenue-generating assets, and reapply for the rehabilitation process to the court by the end of March.
