Top US Republican Leader Calls January 6 Capitol Riot an Armed Rebellion
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Mitch McConnell, the top Republican and Senate Minority Leader, on the 8th (local time) described the January 6 Capitol riot as a "violent insurrection."
On the same day, McConnell rebutted the Republican National Committee (RNC), which criticized his party members Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney, who are participating in the House January 6 Select Committee investigation, by stating, "It was a violent insurrection aimed at preventing the peaceful transfer of power after a legally certified election," according to the political media outlet The Hill. He has previously expressed the view that former President Donald Trump bears responsibility for the Capitol riot.
Earlier, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel mentioned Representatives Kinzinger and Cheney in a resolution, claiming, "They were involved in persecuting citizens who participated in 'legitimate political discourse' but had nothing to do with the violence at the Capitol." By describing the January 6 incident as a venue for legitimate political discourse, she strongly criticized the two Republican members who judged the event as an insurrection and sought to uncover the truth.
In response, McConnell said, "This issue concerns whether the RNC should screen party members who hold views different from the majority, but that is not the RNC's role," adding, "The RNC's role is to support all Republicans." The Hill analyzed that "McConnell has effectively broken ties with the RNC."
