'Party Gate' Fallout... Four Key Members of UK Johnson Cabinet Resign Together
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] As British Prime Minister Boris Johnson finds himself cornered by the so-called 'Party Gate,' four key figures in Johnson's cabinet collectively resigned within a day.
According to BBC on the 3rd (local time), Jack Doyle, Director of Communications at the Prime Minister's Office, Dan Rosenfield, Chief of Staff, Martin Reynolds, Senior Secretary, and Munira Mirza, Policy Director, all tendered their resignations on the same day.
Reynolds was identified as the person who led the parties during the COVID-19 lockdown, while Doyle and Rosenfield were also considered to be indirectly or directly involved. Doyle stated in his resignation that "my family has had to pay a terrible price over the past few weeks."
Mirza has been a close aide since 2008 when Johnson was Mayor of London. Johnson expressed regret over losing Mirza, describing her as "a great colleague for a long time."
With major cabinet members resigning simultaneously, Johnson's political standing is expected to weaken further amid the Party Gate scandal. Party Gate refers to the controversy that arose when it was revealed that senior officials in the Prime Minister's Office, including Johnson, violated the nationwide lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 by holding multiple parties, including drinking gatherings.
