[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation (President Youngpyo Moon) announced the analysis results of the 2021 Garak Market fruit and vegetable transaction performance.
In 2021, the transaction volume of fruit and vegetable categories at Garak Market was 2.22 million tons, a 2.8% decrease compared to the previous year, while the transaction amount was 4.7282 trillion KRW, a 4.3% increase compared to the previous year. The volume of fruit transactions decreased by 3.6% compared to the previous year, whereas the transaction amount increased by 7.5%. For vegetables, the transaction volume decreased by 2.6%, while the transaction amount increased by 3.5% compared to the previous year.
The transaction performance of wholesale market corporations at Garak Market showed that the transaction volumes of Seoul Cheonggwa, Nonghyup Garak (public), Joongang Cheonggwa, Donghwa Cheonggwa, and Hanguk Cheonggwa decreased compared to the previous year, while their transaction amounts increased. Both the transaction volume and amount of Dae-A Cheonggwa decreased compared to the previous year. For items excluded from listing, transaction volume decreased while transaction amount increased compared to the previous year.
The top 5 items by transaction volume at Garak Market were onion, radish, napa cabbage, green onion, and cucumber, while the top 5 items by transaction amount were green onion, strawberry, onion, cucumber, and garlic.
Imported agricultural products totaled 186,000 tons, accounting for about 8.4% of the total transaction volume. The transaction volume of imported fruits remained at the previous year's level of 106,000 tons, with major imported fruits such as banana, orange, grape, and pineapple decreasing. The transaction volume of imported vegetables decreased by 1.8% compared to the previous year to 80,000 tons, with decreases in carrot, pumpkin, and broccoli.
Meanwhile, the average annual growth rate of Garak Market fruit and vegetable categories from 2017 to 2021 was 3.5% for total transaction amount, 4.4% for fruits, and 3.2% for vegetables.
