UN and ASEAN Urge Immediate Halt to Myanmar Military Violence
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] More than a year after the military coup in Myanmar, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have called for the immediate cessation of violence by the military junta.
According to foreign media on the 2nd (local time), the UNSC, with all 15 member states voting in favor, issued a statement expressing "deep concern over the recent additional violence and large-scale displacement in Myanmar," urging "an immediate halt to all forms of violence occurring throughout Myanmar and the protection of civilians' safety."
The Security Council also mentioned the need to strengthen humanitarian aid for those in need and ensure the safe delivery of COVID-19 vaccines. Additionally, it emphasized its full support for ASEAN's role, as a member organization including Myanmar, in the peaceful resolution of the coup situation.
ASEAN, represented by Cambodia as this year's chair, also issued a statement the previous day calling for an immediate stop to violence and restraint from all parties involved. Furthermore, it decided not to invite representatives of the Myanmar military regime to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting scheduled for the 16th-17th of this month.

According to foreign media on the day, Cambodia, the ASEAN chair this year, invited a non-political figure instead of the military-appointed foreign minister to the meeting. Initially, Cambodia, which was friendly to the military regime, had declared the attendance of military representatives but backed down due to opposition from member states.
