Geumcheon-gu Lunar New Year 'Jang Making' Popular
Opportunity to Reflect on Eating Habits for Seol Holiday... Experience Making Gochujang to Restore Disappearing Jang Fermentation Culture and Rediscover Healthy Taste Hidden by Spicy Foods
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yuseonghun) operated the Lunar New Year program ‘Ttukbaegi Boda Jangmat’ for its residents.
‘Ttukbaegi Boda Jangmat’ is a dietary program designed to spread awareness about healthy ‘home-cooked meals’ and ‘proper eating habits’ through making jang, the basic seasoning of Korean cuisine. It has been held annually since 2018, and this year it was conducted on the 24th and 26th of last month as an opportunity to make health resolutions for the new year.
Due to COVID-19, consumption of delivery food and processed products has surged, and the number of people relying on convenience foods in their busy daily lives is increasing.
During the education sessions, residents shared their concerns about food and had a meaningful time seeking answers to health through traditional Korean cuisine.
A resident who participated in the program said, “It was an enjoyable and beneficial time because I could easily make jang, which I thought was difficult,” and added, “I hope there will be more opportunities to receive nutrition education.”

Yuseonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “I hope this education serves as an opportunity to continue the disappearing culture of jang making by easily making gochujang without food additives,” and added, “We will continue to strive to help residents develop proper eating habits.”
