20s Brothers Sentenced to Prison in First Trial for Receiving Billions in Insurance Money through Intentional Accident
[Asia Economy Reporters Seongpil Cho, Gyumin Oh] A court has sentenced two brothers in their 20s to prison for defrauding insurance companies of billions of won by deliberately causing car accidents with acquaintances they met at a youth self-reliance facility.
On the 30th, according to the legal community, Judge Kang Sun-young of the Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 10 sentenced the elder brother, A (22), who was indicted for violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud, to 1 year and 8 months in prison, and the younger brother, B (21), to 1 year and 2 months in prison. C (22), who participated in the insurance fraud with A and others and received a total of 120 million won, was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a 2-year probation and ordered to perform 120 hours of community service.
The court stated the sentencing rationale, saying, "Insurance fraud undermines the social function of insurance and is not a minor offense. Since it involves physical threats, it requires harsher punishment than general fraud. The defendants actively assisted the fraud led by an acquaintance who proposed the crime and continued the offenses even while under police investigation."
Earlier, A and others were indicted for causing traffic accidents on roads in Incheon and other areas around April 2020 at the suggestion of an acquaintance they met at a youth self-reliance living center, and submitting claims to insurance companies as accidents caused by mistakes to receive insurance payouts. It was investigated that they inflated insurance claims by having 4 to 5 people ride in the vehicles used in the crimes. The total insurance money they received through this method is reported to be about 180 million won.
