Jung Yong-jin Meets Chinese Ambassador to Exchange New Year Greetings... "Wishing Success for Beijing Olympics"
Jung Yong-jin, Vice Chairman of Shinsegae Group, met with Xing Haiming, the Chinese Ambassador, to exchange New Year's greetings.
On the 28th, Jung posted a photo of his meeting with Ambassador Xing on his Instagram, writing, "Let's always wish each other good fortune. Excited for the Olympics." He also added the hashtags 'Ambassador Xing Haiming', 'I Support Republic of Korea'.
Shinsegae clarified that the meeting was unrelated to the recent 'Myeolgong' controversy. A Shinsegae representative said, "Vice Chairman Jung has had a personal friendship with Ambassador Xing. It was an occasion to exchange New Year's well-wishes and to pray for the successful hosting of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics."
Last November, Jung expressed his dislike for the Communist Party and attached the 'Myeolgong' hashtag to his Instagram posts, continuing related remarks. Subsequently, concerns arose that this might affect business targeting China and Chinese people, and the controversy extended into the political sphere.

In response, Jung stated, "I do not care whether another country is communist or democratic. If I go to another country, I simply abide by their system and laws. My 'Myeolgong' is solely directed against those living above (North Korea)." On the 13th, he apologized, saying, "If even one colleague or customer turns away because of me, then nothing is justified. If anyone was hurt by my freedom, it is entirely my fault."
