Police Urgently Arrest Gangdong-gu Office Official for Embezzling 11.5 Billion Won in Public Funds
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Gangdong Police Station in Seoul announced on the 25th that they have urgently arrested and are investigating a public official affiliated with the Gangdong District Office on charges of embezzling public funds worth around 10 billion KRW.
According to the police, Mr. A, a grade 7 administrative officer, is accused of embezzling investment funds worth approximately 11.5 billion KRW while working in the district office's Investment Attraction Division for about a year from around December 18, 2019, to February 5 of last year (charge of embezzlement in the course of duty under the Special Act on Criminal Cases). It is reported that he used part of the embezzled 11.5 billion KRW, making it difficult to repay the entire amount.
The police received a complaint from the district office on the 23rd of this month and began an investigation. After imposing a travel ban, Mr. A was apprehended on the 24th in the parking lot of his residence. The police are conducting forensic analysis on his confiscated mobile phone and plan to trace bank accounts to verify the purpose of the embezzlement, the use of the embezzled funds, and whether there are any accomplices.
