The plan is to create a dense network that connects spaces, enabling digital services to be used anywhere from remote islands and mountainous areas to maritime and aerial environments.
On the 25th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it held a forum at Dasan Networks located in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, and decided to establish a 'Next-Generation Network Development Strategy.'
The next-generation network development strategy will include technological innovation plans across the network spectrum such as 5G backbone networks, 6G, satellites, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Discussions will also be held to accelerate the development of advanced technologies such as 5G technology advancement, 6G, and quantum communication.
The government plans to strengthen the network infrastructure by introducing new technologies such as software. It also revealed plans to expand network services beyond land to the sky and sea.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), which attended the forum, forecasted that future media services will evolve toward providing experiences where the distinction between virtual and reality is difficult and offering '6 Degrees of Freedom' (6 DoF). Accordingly, ETRI stated that the evolution of 5G, core components and equipment for 6G, end-to-end ultra-low latency technology, and ultra-spatial network technology must be supported.
The three major telecom companies?SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus?plan to prepare for the advancement of 5G networks and future network technologies such as 6G. SK Telecom plans to expand new communication service areas including Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and autonomous driving.
Samsung Electronics is striving to lead technology by internalizing the development of 5G core chips and acquiring unparalleled software capabilities, and aims to expand the role of the national backbone network through solution development. KT is securing various technologies such as intelligent network evolution to support network-based connectivity, strengthening network security based on quantum cryptography, and expanding connectivity through satellite network interworking. LG Uplus is expanding the network service space while continuously cooperating to ensure that national technical standards and policies are reflected in 5G and 6G standards.
Minister Lim Hye-sook of the Ministry of Science and ICT said, "The government will establish a next-generation network development strategy through public-private cooperation and continuously maintain the superiority of our network competitiveness."
