Germany Reports Record High of 140,000 New COVID-19 Cases; "400,000 Expected Daily"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] The number of daily new COVID-19 cases in Germany has surpassed 140,000, marking an all-time high. The German Health Minister predicted that the spread of the Omicron variant will peak around mid-next month, with 400,000 to 600,000 people contracting COVID-19 daily.
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) data on the 21st (local time), the daily new COVID-19 cases in Germany reached 140,160. There were 170 deaths reported.
The recent 7-day incidence rate per 100,000 population soared to 706.3. The Omicron variant has become dominant, accounting for 73.3% of new cases as of the 14th.

Major foreign media reported that German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach forecasted in a meeting with the heads of the 16 state chancellories that daily new cases would reach at least 400,000 around mid-next month when the Omicron spread peaks. If the booster vaccination effect is poor, the daily new cases could increase to 600,000.
