LG, which has selected AI business as a future growth engine, is accelerating innovation by achieving meaningful results through talent development programs.
According to LG on the 21st, LG held the LG AI Graduate School degree conferment ceremony and the AI Expert Course performance sharing session consecutively on the 17th at the LG AI Research Institute.
From March to December last year, the LG AI Graduate School operated in a pilot form and produced four master's course completers. The trainees, composed of employees from affiliated companies, acquired advanced problem-solving skills through guidance from research committee-level experts at the AI Graduate School, studying the latest AI papers and exploring case studies during this period.
Among the completers, Kang Byunggeun, a senior researcher at LG Display, was selected for the best thesis with his research on 'Display Pixel Layout Design through Deep Reinforcement Learning.'
LG plans to officially open the AI Graduate School this year and apply the know-how gained from the pilot operation to talent development in earnest. They intend to increase the number of graduate students selected from all affiliated company employees and expand programs such as the curriculum. Graduates who pass the thesis review by the graduate school committee will be awarded master's and doctoral degrees recognized within the LG Group.
Baek Gyeonghun, head of the LG AI Graduate School, said, "Since AI is mostly created by people, securing talent is essential," adding, "From this year, the LG AI Research Institute will operate an official AI master's and doctoral program recognized by the LG Group."

This course is a one-on-one mentoring program where LG AI Research Institute researchers participate as mentors and work with practitioners from each affiliate to solve real-world problems.
The second round of training in 2021 was conducted over 12 weeks from September to December, with a total of 17 participants from LG affiliates and AI researchers tackling practical tasks.
Ra Byunghyun, an employee at LG Innotek, was selected as the top project through internal judges and employee evaluations for his 'Research on Automating Electronic Approval Review Tasks Using AI.' This research automates electronic approval reviews to improve the work efficiency of employees who repeatedly review documents and was actually applied to the employee portal of LG Innotek's Safety and Environment Team.
Choi Junggyu, head of the Language Lab, said, "AI produces truly meaningful results only when solving practical problems with real data in the field," and added that they will continue research with employees from all affiliates to sustain meaningful achievements.
